Back from ALA

I just spent five days in Washington DC at the ALA Annual Conference as a delegate to the AASL Affiliate Assembly and then made it back in time for the last day of school. It was a whirlwind week, but well worth it.

I enjoyed hearing about ALA/AASL activities at the national level, including the SKILLs (Strengthening Kids' Interest in Learning and Libraries) Act which was announced Tuesday, June 26th. This is thrilling because of the language it contains for NCLB (No Child Left Behind) that "guarantees students across America will be served by highly qualified, state-certified school library media specialists and will have the library resources they need to succeed." See the AASL website for more information: http://www.ala.org/ala/aasl/aaslissues/SKILLS_Act.cfm

It is so great that you went to ALA.

I didn't realize until this year, that NCLB didn't require librarians to be highly qualified. I actually wrote to the Federal Government for clarification. I guess I was assuming that with Laura Bush being a school librarian, that the highly qualified was a non-issue.

I know, I was very surprised when we gathered at school to fill out the highly qualified paperwork and the HR group said that librarians didn't have to do it. Frankly, I was embarrassed and felt like a second-class citizen as I left the room, so I hope these bills pass.
